Showcase, a startup dedicated to helping publishing houses expand their reach with advanced digital services, sought to revolutionize the book recommendation process. Their goal was to develop an AI solution that could recommend the right book to the right person at the right time. This required a solution that was not only portable — able to be deployed across various publishing clients with various collection — but also scalable to handle spikes in demand, such as during the holiday season.

Editions La Martinière, a French publishing house has been using the service for a year without a single maintenance issue.

The Challenge: Creating a Scalable and Portable AI Recommendation System

Maxence Brochard, CTO at Showcase, approached Spinal to assist in the development of an AI-driven recommendation system. The primary challenges were ensuring the system’s portability to different publishers and its ability to scale efficiently to maintain service continuity during peak times.

The Spinal Solution

Spinal provided a comprehensive engineering platform that enabled Showcase to rapidly prototype, test, and deploy their AI solution. By utilizing a range of services including app builders such as Supabase, ActivePieces, and Weweb, as well as AI tools like Pgvector, Spinal integrated these components into Showcase’s GCP infrastructure.

The solution was developed, tested, and put into production in just one month, meeting all scalability requirements. Additionally, Showcase’s use of GCP credits ensured that running the AI solution incurred no additional costs.

Results: Fast Deployment and Cost Efficiency

With Spinal’s support, Showcase was able to accelerate development and simplify both CI/CD processes and infrastructure maintenance. The AI recommendation system was delivered in a month, seamlessly deployed across publishing clients, and capable of scaling to handle high-demand periods without incurring additional costs.

Maxence Brochard, CTO at Showcase, shared his positive experience with Spinal:

The deployment with Spinal allowed us to speed up development with Supabase, ActivePieces, and Weweb, while significantly reducing the complexity associated with CI/CD and infrastructure maintenance.
